SAN DIEGO, June 29, 2010 – The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today issued a warning to treat male impotence in a case filed in Louisiana federal court on behalf of a patient named Michael W. Smith. The patient’s condition is benign and has been successfully treated with alprostadil, a prostaglandin analogue, in the treatment of his prostate cancer. The patient has been diagnosed with a prostate-related male pattern disorder. He was also treated with a prostaglandin analog to manage his prostate symptoms.
“I’ve heard that patients have a very good prognosis,” said Dr. Paul J. Allen, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Director of the Urology Department.
“We were very concerned about the treatment of male impotence because the prostate is very sensitive. We had been seeing some men who had male impotence, but they’ve been very reluctant to come to the office. We’ve had very few doctors who have any evidence that has shown that there is a serious problem.”
“The patient has been very well treated with alprostadil, but the man’s prostate is not as sensitive as it used to be,” Dr. Allen said.
He added that he had a very good prognosis.
“The patient has not been taking prostaglandin analogue therapy for four years,” he said. “We would like to see him again. It would be very beneficial for him if he could be referred to a urologist.”
The patient, who had been taking alprostadil for the past four years, had a very bad reaction to the medication, he said. He had also experienced an allergic reaction to the medication, and had developed facial swelling and facial redness. The patient had a severe skin rash that was severe enough to have anaphylactic reaction.
The patient was given an alprostadil cream and was seen at the local office, Allen said.
The patient was sent to the U. National Institutes of Health to undergo a complete and thorough medical examination. He was seen in a hospital and was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was placed on Proscar, which was later removed by the FDA.
During the examination and physical examination, the patient was shown to be suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate is enlarged and cannot move and is sensitive to the vasodilating effects of the drug.
The patient had a very good prognosis, he said. “The patient has not been taking prostaglandin analogue therapy for more than four years,” he said. “The man’s prostate is not as sensitive as it used to be, and I’ve seen a very good prognosis.”
Dr. Allen said that, in the case of a patient who was prescribed a drug which is supposed to be safe for him, he would be treated with alprostadil.
“It is very important that a patient is seen and seen by a urologist who knows the patient and who has experience with the treatment,” he said. “There are other drugs that can be used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, and that will help the patient improve.”
The patient has been taking a drug that has not been FDA-approved for the treatment of male sexual dysfunction since the treatment was first approved in 2000. He was prescribed an alprostadil cream, which has been prescribed to men for up to a year and has been available over the counter in many countries.

John G. Gaskins, a urologist at Mayo Clinic, said that the patient’s condition is benign, but he did not find any evidence that the drug had caused the patient’s prostate cancer. “He has been on alprostadil for four years,” he said.
Gaskins said that, in the case of a patient who was taking alprostadil for the past four years, he would be treated with prostaglandin analogue therapy.
In adult men, Proscar is used to decrease an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to alleviate BPH symptoms and possibly avoid surgery. Proscar (Finasteride) may help with BPH symptoms by reducing the need to urinate, improving urine flow with less straining, reducing the sense that the bladder isn't empty, and reducing overnight urination.
This medication works by lowering the quantity of DHT, a natural body hormone that drives prostate growth. Proscar isn't approved for prostate cancer prevention. It may raise the risk of acquiring a very dangerous form of prostate cancer by a small amount.
